First wife of the Prophet ﷺ, the first person to accept Islam, and mother of Fatima (RA). The Prophet ﷺ loved and honoured her deeply throughout his life and beyond.
Beloved daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, wife of Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), and mother of Hasan and Husain (RA). Whenever she entered, the Prophet ﷺ would stand and kiss her forehead.
Cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ, husband of Fatima (RA), the fourth Rightly-Guided Caliph of Islam. Known as Asadullah (Lion of Allah) for his bravery at Badr, Uhud, and Khaybar.
Elder grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, son of Ali and Fatima (RA). Known for extraordinary generosity — he gave away half his wealth to the poor twice in his life. He performed Hajj 25 times on foot.
Younger grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, son of Ali and Fatima (RA). Martyred at Karbala on 10 Muharram, 61 AH. The Prophet ﷺ expressed his profound love for him repeatedly.
Cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, son of his paternal uncle Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. Known as "Hibr al-Ummah" (Scholar of the Ummah) and "Turjuman al-Quran" (Interpreter of the Quran). The Prophet ﷺ made a special dua for him.
Aisha (RA) narrated: "The Prophet ﷺ went out one morning wearing a striped cloak of black camel's hair. Al-Hasan came and he admitted him under it; then Husain came and entered with him; then Fatima came and he admitted her; then Ali came and he admitted him too. Then he said:"
"Allah only wishes to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you completely." — Quran 33:33
📖 Sahih Muslim 2424, Tirmidhi 3787 (Hasan Sahih)
Before or at the Miqat (boundary), perform Ghusl (ritual bath), wear Ihram garments (white unstitched sheets for men; modest regular clothing for women). Make the niyyah (intention) for Umrah and begin the Talbiyah:
"Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak" — Recite continuously until Tawaf begins. (Bukhari 1549)
Prohibitions in Ihram: Cutting hair or nails, hunting, perfume, sexual relations, covering the head for men.
Stop the Talbiyah upon entering Masjid al-Haram. Begin at the Black Stone (al-Hajar al-Aswad), face it, say Bismillah, Allahu Akbar, and begin circumambulating counter-clockwise. Perform 7 complete circuits. Men perform Raml (brisk walking) in the first three rounds.
Between Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone, recite:
After completing 7 circuits, pray 2 Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim. (Quran 2:125)
Go to Safa hill. Face the Kaaba, recite:
Then say "Abda'u bima bada'Allahu bih" and make dua. Walk to Marwa — men walk briskly (run) between the green lights. Each one-way trip counts as one. Complete 7 trips ending at Marwa. This commemorates Hajar (AS) searching for water for her infant Ismail (AS). (Bukhari 1643)
Drink Zamzam water facing the Kaaba, in 3 breaths, with a sincere dua. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk." (Ibn Majah 3062, Sahih)
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan wasi'an wa shifa'an min kulli da' — O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and cure from every disease.
Men: Shave the entire head (Halq) — the Prophet ﷺ made dua 3 times for those who shave — or shorten from all parts equally (Taqsir).
Women: Cut only a fingertip's length from hair — shaving is not permissible for women.
This marks the end of Ihram. All restrictions are lifted. (Bukhari 1727)
Your Umrah is complete! The Prophet ﷺ said: "The accepted Umrah has no reward other than Jannah (Paradise)." (Bukhari 1773, Muslim 1349)
Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka antas-sami'ul-'alim — Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed You are the All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (Quran 2:127)
Muharram — The Month of Allah (Shahrullah)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Shahrullah — the Month of Allah — which is Muharram."
📖 Sahih Muslim 1163Allah says: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve — four of which are sacred." (9:36). The Prophet ﷺ named them: Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
📖 Sahih Bukhari 3197, Sahih Muslim 1679"The Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He said: 'What is this?' They said: 'This is a righteous day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, so Musa fasted it.' He said: 'I am more entitled to Musa than you.' So he fasted it and commanded fasting it."
📖 Sahih Bukhari 2004, Sahih Muslim 1130"If I live until next year, I will certainly fast the 9th (of Muharram)." — the Prophet ﷺ
Ibn Abbas (RA) said: "He meant along with the 10th, to differ from the People of the Book." The Prophet ﷺ passed away before the next Muharram arrived, but his clear intention is Sunnah for us to follow.
Scholar consensus: Fast 9th + 10th together. Some say 10th + 11th is also valid. Fasting only the 10th is still rewarded but misses the complete Sunnah.
📖 Sahih Muslim 1134, Ibn Majah 1736"Fasting the day of Ashura — I hope that Allah will expiate the sins of the year before it." — the Prophet ﷺ
Scholars note this expiation is for minor sins only, as major sins require sincere tawbah (repentance). Ashura fasting was obligatory before the fasting of Ramadan was mandated, then became a strongly recommended Sunnah.
Aisha (RA) said: "When the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, whatever Allah willed was made obligatory, and whoever wished could fast Ashura or leave it." (Bukhari 2001)
📖 Sahih Muslim 1162, Sahih Bukhari 2002The most complete way to observe Ashura following the Prophet's ﷺ intention — fasting two days to distinguish from others who only fast one.
Make abundant remembrance of Allah, recite Sayyid al-Istighfar, and ask for forgiveness throughout these blessed days.
Some scholars mention a narration encouraging generosity to one's family on Ashura (Ibn Majah). Spend on them with good intention.
The martyrdom of Husain ibn Ali (RA), grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, occurred on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH (680 CE) — approximately 50 years after the Prophet ﷺ passed away. This means it happened long after the Prophet ﷺ had already established the Ashura fast for the reason of Musa (AS).
The Sunni position is clear: Ashura fasting is due to the salvation of Musa (AS) and has no connection to the events of Karbala. Sunni scholars including Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn al-Qayyim, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani are explicit that connecting Ashura fasting to Husain's martyrdom is incorrect.
Husain ibn Ali (RA) is deeply loved and respected in Sunni Islam. He is honoured in his own right through the authentic hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ (see the Ahlul Bayt tab), not through Muharram observances.
